Teaching and Living in Remote Australia
Living and working in remote Australia presents a lot of satisfaction as well as challenges. The distance from any major site creates particular challenges so being flexible, independent, somewhat inventive and self reliant help to make the experience more enjoyable. Being able to change a tire, top up the oil, and generally “have a go” at most things is a valuable set of skills for bush life. Being a good bush nurse and/or mechanic can also help. There is a strong community among the staff working in remote areas, extending beyond the College staff. Upon commencement, staff must have senior first aid certificate. On-going training will be provided to ensure all first aid certificates remain valid. All staff are required to undertake training when commencing work to become familiar with the issues and skills needed for effective survival in remote Australia.
Teachers are provided with accommodation in community when they teach at Docker River or Imanpa. While every attempt is made to provide accommodation for each person at the campus, there may be times when accommodation needs to be shared. This is due to the shortage of accommodation in communities for all agencies. Staff at Yulara and Mutitjulu live at the Yulara resort or at the College. Housing at Yulara is subsidised by the College with staff paying minimal rent. Housing at Yulara is at the discretion of the managers of the Resort and based on availability and appointment. It is not possible to guarantee particular types of housing on appointment. Staff are provided with a basic start up kit but are expected to provide their own linen. Linen is available for purchase from the Administration Office.
Staff are expected to care for their housing and gardens. Teachers are expected to care for their schools and undertake general duties at the school. Cleaning of the school buildings are undertaken during break times. Dust is a big issue in Central Australia, so being careful with prevention is important to reduce damage to equipment (particularly computers).
New teachers are advised to bring their own transport (4WD) as there is only one vehicle allocated to each campus. While roads are sealed to Yulara, the road to Docker River is dirt and can be very corrugated. Imanpa is also on a dirt road but this is only a short trip off the Lasseter Highway. Most roads off the main highway are dirt.
Teachers and staff often enjoy camping out under the stars so bringing appropriate camping gear is also suggested (sleeping bag in particular). The College has swags and other camping equipment (not tents). If prospective staff are interested in camping, please discuss what requirements should be brought when commencing duties.
