The International Benchmarking Study Program was run by AISNT for educators across the Territory and led by Dr Stephen Brown. We met for two discussion and information sessions prior to a week- long intensive study tour to Hong Kong. This was followed by a recall at which participants presented on actions they have taken in response to learnings from the program. Hong Kong schools consistently rank near the top of world educational rankings. We had an opportunity to visit schools, a university, examine local practices and gain insights from local principals, teachers and academics. There was also an opportunity for cultural activities, plus a lot of late-night shopping and (for some of us) a visit to Disneyland. “A comment made by the principal of KGV School about using systems to create culture struck a chord. We are currently developing systems and processes that will enable the College to grow, support staff and create a positive culture. The schools were so very different to Nyangatjatjara College but the challenges were very much the same.” - Terry Brown, Deputy Principal “This was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the critical issues that relate to Indigenous education in Australia. I found the discussions about the construction of a post- colonial education with a focus on power, identity and belonging, language of instruction, curriculum design and the political nature of education to be exhilarating.” - Sam Osborne, Board member “To have the opportunity to experience another culture, visit other schools and visit another country was amazing. It certainly opens your eyes up to the rest of the world. The potential opportunities to come out of this trip are numerous.” - Tanya Fleer, Admin/Finance Officer “It was quite clear to me that Hong Kong had indeed successfully overhauled the curriculum in ways to move it into the forefront of educational success on the world stage. What impressed me was the excellent response by the students to the inquiry based style being implemented in the classroom and that students knew how to manage it to reap great benefits in their learning. Overall, a very rewarding experience and I look forward to building the project up as a result of this experience.” - Dan Niemerg, Deputy Principal “I learnt that in this instant world, everyone expects instant answers, instant gratification. And I found no instant answers to education dilemmas – be they Anangu or Chinese, local or international. But I learnt to think, absorb information and think again. And to wonder. And I learnt that you don’t have to ‘find out everything’ on a trip like this – that the learning doesn’t come until you get home and get back to work.” - Chris Harvey, Principal
